Turn a stretch of coast into a layered sea-floor plaque

Move the frame over any coast, bay or island. The sea floor becomes stacked water layers from real depth data, and the land is one sheet with roads and towns engraved, plus a panel with the place's name and position.

Frame a coast on the map
Looking at the frame…
Engraving
Filled in from the map's name for the sea, bay or strait in the frame, when it has one.
A small wooden panel glued into a corner with the name, region, position, depths, sea area and coastline.
Highway shields (US 6, MA 28…) on the engraved roads, where the map has their numbers.
Country and state borders as dashed lines, with each state's (or country's) name in spaced capitals on its land.
Small engraved trees across national and state parks and forests.
Rivers and canals engraved as fine lines.
The named bays and straits engraved on the water.
Lakes inland are cut out of the land and show the lightest water shade.
Name label
On the map, wherever you put it: drag it on the preview, or its corner to resize it. Streets stop short of its letters.
Up to four lines. Left empty, it's the place you searched for.
10 mm
The height of its capitals.
Lettering
Sea layers
5 layers
Shades of water, cut at real sea depths. Inland lakes show in the lightest water shade. With 5 layers at 3 mm the stack is 18 mm tall.
Each layer's depth engraved beside its cut edge (30', 60'…), as on a carved chart.
A thin engraved line halfway between each pair of cut depths, numbered like the edges: more detail without more sheets.
Layer depths
Round depths in feet as on a US chart (30, 60, 120, 180 ft…), closer together in the shallows so every island gets its rings.
Contour smoothing
Soft and Strong round off small wiggles in the layer edges, like a carved chart. Off follows the depth data closely.
