Turn mountains and valleys into a layered topographic plaque

Move the frame over any mountain, range or valley. The land rises in stacked layers from real elevation data, sea, lakes and rivers are one blue sheet beneath, with roads and towns engraved and a panel with the place's name and position.

Frame some land on the map
Looking at the frame…
Engraving
Filled in from the highest named peak near the middle of the frame, or else its main town.
In spaced capitals on the largest open stretch of one layer, as large as fits.
A small wooden panel glued on top in the lowest corner, with the name, region, position, highest and lowest points, relief and land area.
Highway shields (US 6, MA 28…) on the engraved roads, where the map has their numbers.
Country and state borders as dashed lines, with each state's (or country's) name in spaced capitals on its land.
Small engraved trees across national and state parks and forests.
Rivers and canals engraved as fine lines.
Land layers
16 layers
Stacked sheets of land by height, over one water sheet. With 16 layers at 3 mm the stack is 51 mm tall.
Each layer's height engraved beside its cut edge, on the lower side, as on a carved relief map.
A thin engraved line halfway between each pair of cut heights, numbered like the edges: more detail without more sheets.
Layer heights
Evenly spaced from the lowest to the highest point: steep ground gets the most edges.
Contour smoothing
Soft and Strong round off small wiggles in the layer edges. Off follows the elevation data closely.
